譚博士從事臨床心理實務與教育四十年,在加拿大、台灣、美國及香港的醫院與高校工作。他也是基督徒輔導者,幫助信徒面對信仰生活特有的壓力。

譚博士亦曾出任香港學生事務協會主席及執行委員,和於亞太學生事務協會服務多年,曾擔任該協會學生事務學院的教務長,為本地和海外學生事務貢獻良多。

譚博士亦於香港科技大學指導學生輔導及就業服務和學生發展中心長達十五年,同時緊密地與學生事務處及其他部門合作,並建立和擴展了該校標誌性的「卓賢匯」職業教育及個人發展計劃。

譚博士三十年來在香港的心理學和輔導業界發揮領導作用 ,曾擔任香港心理學會會長及香港專業輔導協會會長,並在推動香港的輔導從業員邁向專業認可之路有著舉足輕重的貢獻。

譚博士的輔導取向是以認知行為治療與受輔者為中心的動力組合。前者注重思想、情緒和言行的緊密互動。後者強調人的尊嚴、責任和潛能。受輔者的動機與合作是促進有效輔導的重要因素。

Dr. Tam has participated in clinical psychological practice and education for 40 years at hospital and tertiary education institutions in Canada, Taiwan, America and Hong Kong. He is also a Christian counsellor who has helped Christians to face their unique pressure in life.

He also contributed to the development of student affairs locally via the Hong Kong Student Services Association and abroad via the Asia Pacific Student Services Association.

Dr. Tam also directed the Student Counseling and Career Service and Student Development Center of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology for 15 years, cooperating closely with the other sections of Student Affairs Office, and other departments or offices. During his service in HKUST, he established and expanded the signature Confluence career education and personal development.

Dr. Tam has provided leadership for Hong Kong psychologists and counsellors for 30 years and was the Presidents of Hong Kong Psychological Society and Hong Kong Professional Counselling Association where he made a significant contribution in promoting professional recognition of Hong Kong counsellor.

Dr. Tam's approach is a dynamic combination of cognitive behaviour therapy and person centred counselling. The former emphasises the close interaction among thought, emotion and behaviour. The latter values the dignity, responsibility and actualisation of a person. Motivation and cooperation of the counsellee is an important contributor to favourable counselling outcome.
