About V. Satir & The Satir Model

Virginia Satir (1916-1988) was referred by many as the "mother of family therapy". Her books People Making and Conjoint Family Therapy are two of the central texts of humanistic psychology. Satir held high hopes and great enthusiasm for the ability of the human spirit to make this world a better place to live. She believed that human beings can fulfill what they were meant to fulfill; that they can use themselves more positively, more effectively; and that they can have more choices for greater freedom and power in spite of their past.

The Satir model is known as the "growth model". This model aims to effect lasting change in individuals by enhancing awareness and understanding of communication patterns; discovering family of origin learnings and coping patterns; building self-esteem; expanding self discovery and self responsibility; diagnosing dysfunctional dynamics and reshaping relationships; enhancing congruence and tapping internal resources for external change.

About the Trainer
Jean McLendon
(Director of Training Programs, Satir Systems)
LCSW, LMFT, AAMFT Approved Supervisor, Chapel Hill, North Carolina

Jean McLendon brings over thirty years of professional experience to her career in mental health, human relations, and organizational change. Jean was requested by Satir to substitute her in the month-long workshop of the international Colorado Summer Institute, which Jean had been the Director of the Module 1 Process Community for years, before Satir died in 1998. Currently she serves as President of Avanta: The Virginia Satir Network.
